1 ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees from being cut down.  Mrs. Tautkus' class did the math...that is approximately 117 pounds of paper per 1 tree.  Can our school save 1 tree this year?  Maybe even 2?  We want to know!  At the beginning of December we put out a bulletin to the school: Save all used paper (copy paper and construction paper).

Each week a volunteer (Carol Brennan) will take our boxes of paper to the recycling center and keep track of the total weight for us.

We can recycle paper in our own classroom's we discovered!  In December Mrs. Roller's and Mrs. Tautkus' classes joined forces and spent an afternoon making (recycled) paper to use as part of their Christmas presents for their families.  We learned...
*Paper making is messy.  (The teachers spent over an hour cleaning up.)
*Paper making is wet (90% water and only 10% pulp.)
*Paper making takes time (So much for "1 hour.")
*Paper making is fun (Everyone was smiling and laughing!)
*Red construction paper is made with lots of red dye. (It's all over Mrs. T's counter.)
*Using an iron to dry paper is not an efficient solution.  (The paper is still wet, 24 hours later.)
