WE DID IT!!!  Our igloo is complete with a total of... 924 milk jugs!  Way to go First Graders.  You rock!

Plastic bottles can last for millions of years in a landfill before they break down.  Plastic can be recycled to make decking, chairs, playground equipment and so much more.  After learning about the impact of plastic on the environment we brainstormed ways to make a difference.  We decided to reuse milk jugs by building an igloo (thanks jmeacham.com for the idea!).  At the end of the year we will take apart our igloo and send the jugs to the recycling center to be made into something new.  When we decided to build an igloo we had many questions:

*How many milk jugs can we collect?
*How many milk jugs will it take to build an igloo big enough for our entire class to sit in?
*How can we keep track of how many milk jugs we have collected?
*What happens if someone does not wash out their milk jug before sending it to school?
*How do people keep warm in real snow igloos?

...and so on.  We kicked off our project at the beginning of October.  We have had a blast collecting, cleaning, building, and hypothesizing over the past 3 months.  We finished our igloo on January 21, 2011!  THANKS to all who helped make this project a success!!!

Keep recycling those milk jugs.  There are 3 recycling drop-off points in our great city.

After completing our igloo we worked in groups to share what we learned and research further into the topic of recycling and igloos.  Click on the link below to learn more.
